Mail Call for 9/1

"I live on Walnut Street and I am curious to know why I lose my TV reception every afternoon around 4 p.m.? I am hoping that someone could help me out since I pay $26 a month for cable and explain what is happening. Maybe it is the guy down the street with the antenna, maybe he can reimburse me for my money!"

"I am calling about the way The Herald-Mail reports the public schools. You pick up the paper on any given day, Paramount Elementary is first and foremost, usually a picture, article or something of the sort. While very many other public schools, equally as nice, equally as good, are not reported."

"I read the articles about the man who was providing the computers for the youth club. I am disabled and I am living at Walnut Towers and I am still waiting on them to do something like this for us. I am wondering, with all the press they are getting about the kids, do they do anything for the homeless, elderly and disabled? They made promises, but where are the computers?"

"If anyone is interested in some commercial grade wall coverings, I have a lot of it. I will give it to anyone for free if they come and get it. It is all neutral color and is heavy duty. Leave your name and number in Mail Call and I will call you."

"Hey, Washington County, instead of putting cameras on top of the traffic lights, how about we put cameras on the side of the school buses, so you can catch people going by them while letting children on and off the bus."

"We feel that it is a privilege to express our appreciation to the Pony League All-Stars, who made news for our city at the Pony League World Series. These kids played a lot of tournaments and traveled many miles to reach second best in the United States and third best in the world. What an accomplishment! They played great ball and were coached well. What was so rewarding was at every tournament, different players would shine. At Chambersburg, they were told that 'if they won this one, you have a chance to go the whole way' and they did, they made it with the help of great pitching and defense and Drew Crawford playing a super game. At Poland, Ohio, it was excellent playing by all, as usual. At Rhode Island, Josh Mitchell had a chance to shine with two homers. Thanks to all who made it possible, the parents, the coaches, the kids, all the newspaper coverage and a play-by-play description on the radio. These guys displayed great character and inner chemistry that kept them focused to go all the way. Thanks, Pony League, you need to be commended and should walk with pride among your peers as you enter your first year in high school."

"I am appalled to hear that the dropout rate in Washington County is so high. To suggest that students leave school for the so- called high wages of $7 or $8 is ridiculous. Face the facts, Washington County, we have some of the highest paid administrators, from the superintendent down to the principal, in the state. Their annual salaries range just below $100,000 a year and up. They can't deliver the mark of excellence that would be required of such salaries in the private business sector. No wonder students' tests scores remain somewhat adequate. This county gets rid of the low-scoring students by way of the dropout rate. This county needs to clean house, vote out the old Board of Education, vote in new confident people and replace administrators who failed to meet the needs of the students of this county. This county allocates a great deal of money toward the education of all our children. I personally feel that we are not getting the bang for our buck."

"This is for the person who wanted weeping willows planted in City Park. Why don't you buy them and plant them yourself? That is what you want the Hagerstown Suns owner to do."

"Can anyone tell me a nice public place where I can take my golden retriever dog to learn to swim?"

"If they took off all the cigarette ads off of all the billboards and everything, why are they replacing it with alcohol? When alcohol is what really kills the people. They should put up pretty things."

"Does anyone have the recipe for Poor Man's Crabcakes made with squash? If so, call Mail Call."

"This is a hunter's wife and I was wondering how many hunters shoot their gun in before hunting season. Call Mail Call."

"Let me see, what is it exactly that the State Highway people and our magnificent local politicians have achieved for us out there on the Dual Highway? Would someone please let me know exactly what it is that they have done or accomplished, that we are so happy about after all these months?"

"We would like to wish Larry in Waynesboro, Pa., a happy 57th birthday on Sept. 1. Love, Rita and Linda."
