Saturday's local roundup - Eagles lose in opener


HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Gino Cardinale rushed for four touchdowns, all from 32 yards or beyond, as Wheeling Park beat Hedgesville 33-18 in the season opener Friday.

John Dunham ran for one touchdown and threw for another to lead Hedgesville (0-1). Sean Moore connected with Brian Thomas on a 43-yard touchdown. Moore finished with 76 yards passing, while Chris Amenta rushed for 86 yards for the Eagles.


Houghton 6, Shepherd 0

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - JoAnna Beardsley's hat trick led Houghton College to an easy romp over Shepherd in the Rams' season opener.

Amy Ridgey, a freshman for Shepherd (0-1). made 10 saves.


Hagerstown Church Softball

Christ Reformed St. James 22, Grace Brethren 3: Allan Moore and Brad Moore each had a home run for Christ Reformed. Jody Rohrer had a home run for Grace Brethren.


Maranatha/Virginia Ave. Church of God 21, Otterbein 13: Frankie Scurry had four hits, including a homer, while Brian Smith and Cliff Miles had four hits for Maranatha. Ray Scadden and Smiley Jackson had three hits. Jay Johnson, John Pickett and Kevin Walters homered for Otterbein.


Grover Frye Tournament

The 2000 Grover Frye Memorial Baseball Tournament will be held in Frederick and Washington County Sept. 2-4. It is a double-elimination style tournament.

Three games will be held at HCC beginning Sept. 2, starting at 10 a.m. when the Hagerstown Braves will play against the Howard Orioles. Three games will also be held at South Hagerstown at 10 a.m., while two games will be held at North Hagerstown starting at 1 p.m.

There will be 16 teams in the tournament, representing five states.

Finals will be held at Brunswick High Sept. 4. The quarterfinals will be held at 10 a.m. with semifinals at 1 p.m. and the championship at 4 p.m.
