Break-in, damage reported at county service station

Early Wednesday morning, Washington County Sheriff's deputies were called to Byer's Self Service at 18 N. Conococheague St. in Williamsport for a break-in.

Two doors were damaged but nothing was taken by thieves who were probably scared away when the alarm went off, deputies said.

- Around 4 a.m. Wednesday, someone broke into a vehicle at 417 Artizan St. in Williamsport and stole a stereo and other electronic equipment. The loss was between $500 and $600.

- Two backpacks valued at $300 were taken from a vehicle parked on Dam No. 5 Road near the dam, deputies said. The windows of the vehicle were broken out.


- A light and a signal cover were taken from a vehicle at 18308 B Shawley Drive.

- Thieves made off with four tires from a new truck at Hagerstown Ford, 1714 Massey Boulevard, Tuesday.

City police charge Pa. man with having fake drugs

A 36-year-old Pennsylvania man was charged with possession of fake drugs early Wednesday after he completed a transaction with an undercover police officer in the 100 block of East Franklin Street, Hagerstown City Police said.

Edward Willard Morgan, of White Haven, Pa., was picked up at 2:07 a.m. and released on personal recognizance later in the day.

Man tells police he was accosted by black youths

A man walking home from work on Fairground Avenue at Mulberry Street just before 4 p.m. Tuesday told Hagerstown City Police he was accosted by six black youths who demanded his money.

He produced $44 and then the boys left. No weapon was displayed.

Mobile home fire occurs along Greene Twp. road

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Firefighters responded to a mobile home fire in Greene Township, Pa., Wednesday afternoon, according to the Franklin County 911 Center.

The fire at the mobile home was reported at 5:18 p.m. at 1595 Coldspring Road, according to a dispatcher. A Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Co. member said firefighters were still cleaning up the scene at about 7 p.m.

Bike found, speakers stolen, city police report

Hagerstown City Police reported the following activity Wednesday evening:

- A black and silver 20-inch Haro bicycle was found in the first block of West Wilson Avenue.

- Speakers and an amplifier were stolen from a locked 1988 Chevrolet Camaro parked in the rear of 842 Spruce Street.

Police said the driver's side lock had been pried open.

- Police investigated a dispute between a man and a woman in which they each allegedly assaulted each other.

Firefighters battle Western wildfires in Montana, Idaho

As wildfires in the Northern Rockies rage on, 54 Maryland Department of Natural Resources forest rangers and volunteer firefighters are battling blazes in Wisdom, Mont., and Atlanta, Idaho, according to DNR spokeswoman Susan O'Brien.

Kevin Moore, a DNR forest ranger who works in Frederick County, Md., left Tuesday for the Valley Complex fire at Bitterroot National Forest near Darby, Mont.

Moore will work as a team leader to prevent fires from spreading to residential areas, she said.

Volunteers fighting the fires work 14-day tours with two days for travel.
