Respect - Eagles know what it means to them

By DAN KAUFFMAN / Staff Writer

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - After an 0-10 campaign in 1999, Hedgesville senior running back Matt Barrett put the Eagles' mission for 2000 in simple terms.

"We've got to get our respect back," Barrett said.

Getting back that respect has been the theme of Hedgesville's workouts this summer.

"Our number one goal this year is to get respect back for the school," junior running back Brian Thomas said. "August 25th is coming around quick, and that's when we're gonna have to prove it."

Hedgesville's hopes ride, in large part, on the shoulders of both Barrett and Thomas, who have competed with senior John Dunham for the two running back slots in the Eagles' wing-T offense. The depth in the backfield, which also includes senior fullback Chris Amenta, has second-year head coach David Lopez looking forward to better fortunes.

"They've all been getting their touches," Lopez said. "You can put them in a rotation, which is what we've been doing. ... I'd like to see all three emerge."

"It just depends on who can make the right plays," Barrett said of the fight for playing time between the backs. "If anyone gets injured, someone can step in and play."

Last season, an injury put quarterback Sean Moore, then a junior, behind center for the majority of the snaps. The experience should help him lead this year's team as a senior.

"He's probably our main guy as far as leadership goes," Lopez said. "He's agile, smart and picks up everything fast."

"It's a position many people strive to achieve," Moore said. "If everyone does their best at their own spot, it will help us advance when it all comes together."

Lopez's biggest challenge is to mold together a defensive unit that gave up an average of 39.4 points per game last season.

The 4-4 defense is anchored up front by Moore and his brother, sophomore Ryan Moore, at the ends. Junior John Hess and senior Steve Berg are the tackles, while Amenta and Barrett will likely anchor the corps of linebackers.

"We're trying to get the kids to run to the football and play tough-nosed defense," Lopez said. "We tell them if (the opponent) can't score, they can't win."

Stopping the opposition will be the key to Hedgesville's season. It's a long road back to respectability, but the first step - regaining confidence - is underway.

"Our kids feel they are better," Lopez said. "They have confidence, and that's key in football."
