Goretti girls win season opener


HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Bobbie Johnson had two goals and two assists and Janet McCullough had six saves for the shutout as St. Maria Goretti took a 5-0 victory over Hedgesville in the season opener for both teams.

Erin Ryan had a goal and an assist and Meggan McGill and Marett Diamond also scored for the Gaels, who finished with a 27-6 advantage in shots. Summer Williams made nine saves for the Eagles.


Hagerstown Area Church Softball

Christ Reform/St. James 24, Tri-State 15: Mike Hull went 5-for-6, with three triples, to lead Christ Reform to victory.

Otterbein 17, Grace Brethren 5: Mike Grimm and Richard Wilson had four hits to lead Otterbein. Jay Johnson, Kevin Walters and John Pickett had three hits, with Walters adding a home run.

Pinesburg/Hub City Softball

Hatch & Kirk/PTL Bit & Supply swept the Pinesburg Panthers for the Division 3 tournament title.


Ollie's 25, J&W 18: Tyler Hoffman had five hits and Scott Yeakle had four hits to lead Ollie's. Mike Weaver, Chuck Mundey, Dale Leydig and Mike Hoffman added three hits.

Crazy Horse/O'Neil Physical Therapy 13, Stadium Tavern 3: Bobby MacPhearson went 4-for-4 with two home runs as Crazy Horse evened the best-of-3 championship series. Johnny Byers had four hits and Jeff Foltz had three hits. Game 3 is Monday.

Freddie's 16, Lenox 14: Todd Mobley, Troy Sites, Robert Winslow, John Mobley, Don Rupp and Sicky Shamrock all had three hits to lead Freddie's. Todd Mobley hit a home run.

Firestone 21, Miller Light 6: Brian Higgins went 5-for-5 and Todd Smith and Dave Ecton had four hits to lead Firestone. Mike Leigh, Brian Kendal and Todd Ricker homered for the winners, while Jeff Beatty homered for Miller Light.


Goretti 177, Hedgesville 186

John Sanicola shot 42 to lead St. Maria Goretti to victory at Fountain Head Country Club. Brian Clark had a 41 for Hedgesville.
