Martinsburg opens well

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Chris Butcher fired a four-over 76 on Wednesday to pace homestanding Martinsburg to a 10-shot victory in the season-opening Martinsburg Invitational at Stonebridge Golf Club.

Martinsburg's four-player total of 319 was 10 better than Jefferson, which finished at 329. Preston County was third at 330 and St. Maria Goretti, paced by Bobby Jones' 85, finished fourth at 355.

Rounding out the field: Fort Hill 372, Clear Spring 380, Hedgesville 389, Musselman 392, Berkeley Springs 416.

South Mountain 9, Federal 0: Daniel Perkins threw a two-hitter, while Zach Shifler and Alan Beard had two hits for South Mountain.


Halfway 15, Valley 2: Zach Barnhart had three hits, while Coty Grove and Mike Larkin added two hits each for Halfway.

South Mountain 6, National 4: Rick Crumnit had two hits to lead South Mountain. Justin Higgins and Sean Mertz had two hits for National.


Maugansville 16, National 2: Tyler Braithwaite had two home runs, while Scott Keeney had two hits, including a homer, and Kenny Shanholtz had two hits for Maugansville. Marcellus Sumlin had two hits, including a homer, for National.

South Mountain 4, Federal 0: Jeremiah Mills pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts for South Mountain. Harrison Hammond had the only hit and had 11 strikeouts for Federal.

Zerance 6th in mile

YORK, Pa. - North Hagerstown junior Lindsay Zerance finished sixth overall and second in the 16-19 age group in the Market St. Mile, held Sunday.

Zerance ran a personal-best 5 minutes, 48 seconds, following up on his 5:55 clocking in the Harrisburg Mile in July.


Hub City Softball

Crazy Horse 21, Osbornes 6: Doug Keller and Ronnie Brown went 6-for-6, while Denny Wallech added six hits for Crazy Horse.
