Braves rally, take Blue Ridge lead

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

The Hagerstown Braves waited a little longer than normal for some late-game heroics in Game 1 of the Blue Ridge Adult League championship series - about 24 hours.

It was still enough time to pull out a win, though, as Hagerstown scored three times in the bottom of the seventh in the suspended game Wednesday for a 5-4 win over the Chambersburg Rockies at Hagerstown Community College.

"You never feel out of a game with these guys," Hagerstown manager Danny Cunningham said. "We have done a good job of coming back all season. These guys love to play baseball and they showed it."

The Braves trailed 4-2 heading into the final inning Tuesday night when darkness suspended play, but found plenty of daylight Wednesday tow in the game.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, a single, hit batter and walk loaded the bases for P.J. Hiser, who hit a two-run single to right that tied the game, 4-4.

John Hearn's groundout put runners on second and third with two outs and set the stage for Zack Swisher. He singled to center to drive in Pat Sweeney and win the game.

"I was ahead in the count 2-0 on a pair of fastballs," Swisher said. "I expected another fastball and I got it. It feels good to get that big come-from-behind win. It didn't look too good at first when we came in today trailing, 4-2. But we just kept getting people on base."

J.R. Fitzwater pitched the final 1 1/3 innings in relief to get the win.

Fitzwater retired 14 of the 18 batters that he faced and erased one of them on a double play.

"I just wanted to keep the ball down and get a lot of groundball outs," Fitzwater said. "I wanted to let the infield do the work. I had good fielding support behind me."

Game 2 will be completed at 7 tonight at Henninger Field in Chambersburg. Game 3 will start immediately afterward.
