Back to School Expo canceled

The City of Hagerstown won't hold its annual Back to School Expo this year because of falling attendance, said Public Information Manager Karen Giffin.

In its eight years, the expo had given Washington County children an opportunity to learn more about the first day of school. Nonprofit agencies and schools had set up booths in downtown Hagerstown in early August.

Dropping attendance was a sign that both organizers and attendees were burned out by the promotion, Giffin said.

Organizers also would have had to find new sponsors to replace the Downtown Assessment District, whose special taxing district was eliminated last year.

After a two-year break, the city will consider reviving the expo with fresh ideas, Giffin said.
