Republican Club sets meeting



CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - The Republican Club of Jefferson County has set its annual Summer Bash for Saturday, Aug. 12, at noon, at the pavilion at Morgan Grove Park. Political candidates running in the fall election will be present.

$6,000 obtained for Shippensburg Fair



SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg Community Fair has received $6,000 from the state to repair and make upgrades to the stage area, said state Rep. Jeff Coy, D-Franklin. Coy said the matching grant was awarded under a program to support capital improvements at fairs in Pennsylvania.

The Shippensburg Fair Committee has completed 80 percent of the work. The rest will be completed later this month. The grant will be used to replace wooden support beams under the stage, install new wiring and paint the stage, restrooms and dressing rooms. The money comes from the state Department of Agriculture.

W.Va. cheerleading tryouts scheduled



CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Shepherdstown Junior High School cheerleading tryouts begin Monday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A cheerleading clinic is set from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants are asked to pack lunches and bring water.

They are also to dress in shorts, a white T-shirt and athletic shoes, organizers said. Hair is to be pulled back and no jewelry or glitter is allowed. Cathy Junkins may be contacted for more information at 304-535-2882.

Update on medical care scheduled



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Berkeley Senior Services will hold an update on Medicare, long-term care, assisted living, Medi-gap insurance problems and other health care issues from 2-5 p.m. today at Berkeley Senior Center, 217 N. High St., Martinsburg, W.Va.

The forum is sponsored by AARP and Berkeley Senior Services.

Jefferson High to hold orientation



CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Jefferson High School will hold an orientation for new students and incoming sophomores from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16, in the school auditorium.

Students will receive their schedules and locker assignments, receive information about school clubs and organizations and learning about sports opportunities, organizers said.

Jefferson, Farm Bureau picnic set



CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - The 31st annual Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and Farm Bureau annual picnic will be Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Royal Vendors, Inc., in the Bardane Industrial Park near Kearneysville, W.Va., organizers said.

Facility tours begin at 6 p.m. and dinner begins at 7 p.m.

The 280,000-square-foot manufacturing plant was opened in 1987.

Tickets are $9 for adults and $4 for children under age 10. Tickets must be purchased by Friday at the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce office, 201 Frontage Road (Ohio Valley Bank building, second building).
