Funkstown forced to walk away

FREDERICK, Md. - Greenbelt Post 136 took what was given them Wednesday - namely 10 walks in the first six innings - to eliminate Funkstown Post 211 10-5 in the semifinals of the Maryland American Legion State Baseball Tournament at Loats Field.

Greenbelt (35-8) built a 7-0 lead against starter Ryan Wingerd and Matt Bellon, who relieved Wingerd in the sixth.

Funkstown (27-10) also committed five errors. Those, combined with the 10 walks and nine Greenbelt hits, proved to much for Post 211 to overcome.

"We were picked to finish third in the district at the beginning of the year and we ended up third in the state of Maryland," Funkstown manager Darryl Powell said. "That is fantastic. With this team, I have got all positive things to say about them. For a team this young, they just overachieved and had a fantastic year."

Dan Nicol scattered seven hits and walked none to earn the complete-game victory for Greenbelt.

"Dan had an outstanding performance on the mound," Greenbelt manager Larry Prange said. "He was getting tired in the last inning. But we were able to leave him in because we had the big lead."

P.J. Hiser slugged a pair of solo home runs, the second of which started a four-run ninth-inning rally. Aaron Showe belted a two-run homer and Joe McGhee added an RBI single in the final frame.

"We battled to the end and that was evident," Powell said. "We didn't hit the ball for most of the game. But we put it together in the last inning and we made a run at them."

Matt Capece had three hits and Marcel Courtillet drove in four runs for Greenbelt.
