Berkeley meeting today

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Berkeley County Citizens' Coalition will meet from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. today at the Martinsburg Fire Department, 200 North Raleigh St., Martinsburg, W.Va. Guest speakers are Shepherd College professors Kevin Williams and Doug Cooper. Those interested are asked by organizers to call 304-267-9766 for more information.

W.Va. 45 closed for work

BURLINGTON, W.Va. - W.Va. 45, at the old Leonard orchard property - 1,000 feet south of Boyd Orchard Road (County Road 45/7) - will be closed Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to about 5 p.m. for the installation of a culvert across the road.

The West Virginia Department of Highways detour will be I-81, between Exit 8 and Exit 12, said Mark C. Baker, crew chief.


Pre-school registrations begin

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Board is currently registering students for the 2000-2001 school year for Martinsburg Pre-School held in the War Memorial Park pool building.

The pre-school begins in September and runs through May 2001. There are three classes. There is a Monday-Wednesday-Friday class for 4- and 5-year-olds from 9:15 to 11:45 a.m. There's a class for 3-year-olds on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:15 to 11:45 a.m. And, there will be a two-day-a-week program for 4- and 5-year-olds from 12:45 to 3:15 p.m.

Space is available in all classes. Organizers ask those interested to call 304-264-4842.

Hedgesville to hold orientation

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Students needing to enroll at Hedgesville High School can begin enrollment Wednesday, Aug. 16, school officials said.

To register, students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have the following: a copy of a birth certificate, copy of transcripts from the previous school, and immunization records.

School officials ask those interested to call the school at 304-754-3354 for more information.

Hedgesville High to host orientation

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Hedgesville High School will host a freshman-new student parent orientation from 6-8:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 24.

The orientation is for parents early and organizers ask that students do not attend.

Hedges Chapel to hold open house

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Hedges Chapel will hold its 150th anniversary open house 1-5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 5. The quilt presentation will be at 1 p.m. The chapel is on Mountain Lake Road about four miles south of W.Va. 9, across from the golf entrance to the Woods Resort.

Jefferson chamber event set

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - The 31st annual Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce-Farm Bureau Get-together will be Wednesday, Aug. 9 at Royal Vendors in the Bardane Industrial Park near Kearneysville.

Facility tours are set from 6-7 p.m. A picnic dinner prepared by the Independent Fire Company Auxiliary will follow at 7.

Tickets are $9 for adults and $4 for children under 10. Tickets must be purchased from the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce office, 201 Frontage Road - second floor, One Valley Bank building - in Charles Town.

Waynesboro back-to-school drive set

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Waynesboro Area Human Resources Council has set its back-to-school drive for school supplies.

Donations may be made at the council's center, 40 West North St., Waynesboro, Pa.; at local churches; at the Big Kmart at the Waynesboro Mall and at Office Essentials on Main Street.

Organizers are requesting participants to donate the traditional items along with pocket dictionaries and small calculators. Needs targeted toward small children include crayons, glue, scissors, pencil boxes or cases. Also needed are backpacks and bookbags.

Cash donations are also being accepted. Donations should be made to the Waynesboro Area Human Services Council.

Those requesting supplies may begin signing up Wednesday, Aug. 23. Supplies will be distributed until Friday, Sept. 15. Individuals who are already center clients are asked by organizers to bring identification. Those not signed up should show identification and proof of income.
