Local roundup - South Mountain suffers first state loss

PERRYVILLE, Md. - South Mountain fell into the loser's bracket of the Maryland 11-12 Little League State Tournament on Sunday, losing a 6-4 decision to Fruitland.

Jeremiah Mills had two hits for South Mountain.

South Mountain plays an undetermined opponent tonight at 7:30 in the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

American 10, National 2: Jarrell Rodriguez tossed a 12-strikeout, three-hitter while joining and Travis Kelly with a two hit game for American.

Maugansville 8, South Mountain 6: Brett Bloom had three hits, including a home run, and P.J. Cooper and Josh Keyfauver had two hits for Maugansville. Travis Hahn had two hits, including a home run, for South Mountain.


West End 13, Hancock 0: Alex Grove and Brandon Morris combined on a three hitter to lead West End. Grove had two hits for West End.

River City Classic

American 5, West End 3: Jeff Porter struck out seven for American, which plays Maugansville today at 6 p.m. Chris Jackson had two hits for West End.


Hagerstown wins tourney

POLAND, Ohio - Hagerstown's 14-year-old 'A' team won the West Region, going 4-0 in the tournament.

Hagerstown defeated Neo Continental 5-0 in the championship game. T.J. Hose struck out 12 in a four-hit shutout. Andy May hit a solo home run.

Hagerstown will play in the Zone Tournament in Woonsocket, R.I., beginning Friday against the North Region winner. It's a four-team, double-elimination tournament.

Hagerstown 7, Fayetteville 3

Jamus Peterman struck out six and walked none in a complete-game victory to give the Hagerstown Braves a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 series in the second round of the league championship playoffs.

Hagerstown, which received a first-round bye, will host Fayetteville in the second game of the series today at 6 p.m. at Hagerstown Community College.

Nate Reeser had two doubles and three RBI and Scott Frye had two hits for Hagerstown.


Jerry's Sports/Adam's wins States

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Jerry's Sports/Adam's Pizza went 5-1 to win the Class E NSA state tournament. Rodney Young, Earl Rowland and Jeff Hetzer batted over .600.

The victory qualifies the team for the NSA World Series in September and the Super Worlds in October.

Manager Butch Hess has guided two state championship teams in five years.
