Cycle runs off road, two taken to hospital

SMITHSBURG - A man and woman were taken to Washington County Hospital on Saturday night after their motorcycle went off Md. 77, according to the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company.

The motorcycle was heading toward Smithsburg when it went off the road at 7:20 p.m. near the turn just off Md. 64, said firefighter Charles Baker.

No further information was available.

Camping trailer falls on Walkersville man

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - A Walkersville man was in critical condition Saturday night at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a camping trailer he was working under fell on his head and chest, officials said.

Phillip Duane Pirker, 57, was in the hospital's intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Pirker was found under the camping trailer in his driveway at 8785 Inspiration Court around 3:14 p.m., according to Frederick County Emergency Services and the Frederick County Sheriff's Department.


No one was sure how long he had been under the trailer before he was found, according to the sheriff's department.

Neighbors heard a woman scream and ran to help, using jacks to lift the camper off Pirker, police said.

The trailer was supported by a jack and a pile of boards when the jack flipped and the trailer fell on Pirker, police said.

Car, camping trailer overturn on I-81

A New York man was treated and released from Washington County Hospital on Saturday after his 1997 Ford and camping trailer overturned on Interstate 81, officials said.

Richard Koen, 36, of Elmira, N.Y., and his wife, Jean, were northbound on I-81 at 10 a.m. Saturday when a gust of wind caused Koen to lose control of the Ford, police said.

Fire damages home, kills two pets

NEW MARKET, Md. - It was unclear Saturday whether a house fire on Friday was caused by electrical problems or a lightning strike, said New Market Fire Co. Chief David Yankey.

It took firefighters about 10 minutes to knock down the 7:24 p.m. fire on Boyers Mill Road, Yankey said.

No one was home at the time, Yankey said. A dog and cat did not survive the fire, but a pet snake did, he said.

The fire caused heavy damage to the home, Yankey said.

The fire marshal could not be reached Saturday for comment.

DWI charges filed in three accidents

FREDERICK, Md. - Three Maryland men were charged with driving while intoxicated after three separate accidents between 11:30 p.m. Friday and 1:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Maryland State Police.

According to police:

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> Anthony Saavedra, of Thurmont, Md., drove a 1990 Subaru off the road near Md. 550 and Franklinville Road.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> Wheeler D. Collins, of Woodstock, Md., drove a 1992 Lexus off Main Street in Libertytown, Md. Collins was treated and released from Frederick Memorial Hospital on Saturday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
