Sylvia O. Showe

Sylvia O. Showe, 76, of 418 N. Prospect St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore.

Born May 29, 1924, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry C. and Goldie Mary Swartz.

Her husband, Charles E. Showe, died in 1982.

She was a homemaker.

She attended Mountain View Baptist Church in Clear Spring.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda L. French of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Pastor Bill Clark will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.


The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Augustus Newman Jr.

THORNTON, Colo. - Augustus Newman Jr. Commander, U.S. Navy Retired, 75, of Thornton and formerly of Greenhill Drive, Hagerstown and Pleasant Valley died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at his home.

He was born June 12, 1924, in Providence, R.I.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eloise Newman.

He retired from the U.S. Navy; and Westinghouse Corporation.

He was a member of American Legion; Association of Naval Aviation Retired Officers; B.P.O.E.; L.O.O.M.; and Artist Blacksmith Association of North America.

He is survived by his second wife, Cynthia L. Sullivan Newman; seven children, Carol Matthews of Newport Beach, Calif., Deane Brockway of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Patricia Ann Jackson of Port Charlotte, N.C., Phillip Newman of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Debra Fleagle of Thornton, Colo., Christopher Schlotterbeck of Sackets Harbor, N.Y. and Richard Ryder of Sussex, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by Rundus Funeral Home, Broomfield, Colo.

Zack J. Draper

SMITHSBURG - Zack J. Draper, 71, of Pleasant Valley Road, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at his home.

Born July 25, 1929, in Garfield, Md., he was the son of the late Samuel B. and Mae Neuman Alsop Draper.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was employed by Fraver Garage in Smithsburg; and Miller and Long Construction in Bethesda, Md. He also was a farmer.

He was a member of Washington County Farm Bureau; and National American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane E. Hays Draper; four daughters, Joyce A. Draper, Virginia E. Coleman, Mary A. Harshman and Susan E. McFatridge; a son, James A. Draper; a half brother, Charles Alsop; a granddaughter; seven grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg. The Rev. William C. Kercheval will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Bethel Cemetery in Foxville, Md.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

H. Marjorie Roberts

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - H. Marjorie Turner Roberts, 76, of Kelly Road, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born May 5, 1924, in Fishertown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ruie Reininger Parks.

Her husband, Wilbert Henry Roberts, died in 1984.

She was a 1942 graduate of Schellsburg High School.

Prior to retirement, she was employed as a bookkeeper for Bethmont Surgical Supply in Bethesda, Md., and Pargas Inc. in Rockville, Md.

She is survived by three children, Janet E. Parks of Walkersville, Ellen M. Smythe of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Carol J. Marshall of Rockville; two stepchildren, William Roberts of Rockville, and Lucille Henry; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two uncles, two aunts.

She was preceded in death by one son, Rean J. Miller; and an aunt.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Md. The Rev. Dick Ellis will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Hope Presbyterian Church, 216 Carroll Parkway, Frederick, MD 21701.

Chloe R. Shafer

Chloe R. "Sis" Corwell Shafer, 90, of Virginia Avenue, Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village in Hagerstown.

Born Feb. 22, 1910, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Jacob C. and Mabel Irene Foxenberger Corwell.

Her husband, Harry Emory Shafer, died in 1988.

She attended St. Mary's School in Hagerstown, and graduated in 1950 from St. Paul's Institute School of Nursing in Baltimore.

She was a licensed practical nurse in private duty nursing and at Williamsport Nursing Home. She also was co-owner of Shafer Water Service in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship and was a former Sunday school teacher.

She was a member and past president of District 12 Fire Company ladies auxiliary in Fairplay.
