County creates new school zone

The Washington County Commissioners Tuesday unanimously created a school zone around St. James School on College Road.

School officials had requested the zone because of concern about high traffic speeds in the area, Washington County Chief Engineer Terrence P. McGee said. A county engineering study verified some drivers were traveling at excessive speeds, he said.

Creation of the zone allows the doubling of speeding fines, he said.

County Highways Department crews will install a third pedestrian crosswalk in that area and upgrade striping and signs to increase public awareness of the changes.
