One-way street to ease traffic at Salem Avenue

School officials hope a change in traffic patterns in front of Salem Avenue Elementary School will cut down on congestion and make conditions safer for pedestrians.

Salem School Drive, the private road in front of the school, will carry traffic in one direction, requiring cars to exit onto Church Street.

The road is a loop that is used as a drop-off and pickup area for school buses and parents. Four buses and one kindergarten bus are used to carry some of the school's 460 students, while parents pick up some and others walk to and from school.

Principal David Unruh said the street's former two-way designation left little room for cars and buses to park and maneuver in and out of other parked vehicles.

"It was almost impossible to pass," Unruh said.

He said an accident last spring prompted talks with the Washington County Board of Education about improving conditions. He expects pedestrians and drivers to notice the change when school starts on Aug. 28.

This is the first time the Salem School Drive has been changed to a one-way street.

"We'll see safer traffic flow and a little less congestion as far as traffic is concerned," Unruh said.
