Mail Call for 7/26

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Why can't the City of Hagerstown take over and start its own ambulance service instead of trying to rely on CRS and pumping money into them?"

"I need help from all The Daily Mail readers. If there is anyone out there that has the recipe for the starter of the Friendship Cake. I have the recipe for the cake, but I do not have the recipe for the starter. So please, I know someone out there can help me and put it in Mail Call."

"I am tired of hearing about this tobacco issue. I thought we were a free country? We are acting like communists. We don't have the freedom to speak anymore and we don't have the freedom of who can be in the car with you or how to drive. I am a woman almost 80 years old and I have smoked for almost 30 years. I don't smoke now, but I was a heavy smoker for 30 years and I don't know the reason they are yelling about smoking when they advertise alcohol all the time. What is the difference? Is there proof that cigarettes kill you? We know that alcohol does kill."

"Honorable mayor and council, please take a look at your city, it is getting very dirty. It had been clean in all areas, but recently we are getting a bad situation on Franklin Street. As you approach the city, the first two or three blocks are disgusting, then the rest of the blocks are beautiful. After you talk to some of the landlords, they could care less. Make them liable for their tenants behavior as far as discarding their trash. I think some of that falls back on the landlords as well as the city fathers. Put some Dumpsters, trash cans, or better yet, Virginia has a very strict law, if you throw something out your car or window onto the pavement, you are fined. Virginia enforces it. I think we have that law, too. Rather than tagging all the cars downtown, let's tag the people for bottles and cans of beer sitting on the stoops of people's houses. It is really pitiful. Hagerstown is becoming a pitiful site. I am afraid to bring companies into this town and show it to them."

"Kerri Sacchet's article on City Park in Hagerstown was beautifully written, but I was disappointed that she failed to mention the beautiful Western Maryland steam engine up on the hill."

"People of Colonial Park, please use respect, courtesy and consideration when going out in the early morning hours on the weekend when walking dogs or walking. People are not awake. For the people who work long and hard during the week, that is the only opportunity that we have to sleep in. Fighting dogs, loud talking neighbors, lawn mowers, people hammering and people working on cars. This is disrespectful and rude. It is not fair for us to be woken up by barking dogs and loud people."

"I want to congratulate Shane and Clarissa for having a son, Pierce, 10 and a half pounds. Congratulations."

"Do companies who give 25 or 30 cent raises each year actually believe that this is going to take care of the families increased cost per year? This is ridiculous and insulting. They should give two small increases per year and even that wouldn't be enough."

"How do I clean polished brass?"
