Local roundup: Shepherd, Rooths get preseason honors

Shepherd College and its kick returner James Rooths find themselves in familiar positions - on top with everyone shooting for them.

Rooths was named to the Lindy's 2000 All-Division II Team as the kick return specialist while the Rams were selected as the No. 10 team in the publication's preseason poll.

Rooths returned three punts for touchdowns last season which allowed him to set a new NCAA record with eight career scoring returns. He has led NCAA Division II in punt returns for the last two seasons and is a returning starter at defensive back.

The Rams finished last season 9-2 after being eliminated by Millersville in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Millersville's Drew Folmar, of Chambersburg, Pa., was selected as the all-Division II team starting quarterback.

Carson-Newman (Tenn.) was named the No. 1 team in the preseason poll. Shepherd was the only member of the West Virginia Conference to be rated in the top 25.
