Post 211 sweeps district

FUNKSTOWN - The players for Funkstown Post 211 obviously listened to their parents as children. Years later, they still know that "Walk, don't run" pays off in a big way.

Funkstown drew 14 walks Saturday, including four in a row in the bottom of the ninth inning, to beat Mount Airy Gold Star Post 191 5-4 and sweep the Western Maryland District American Legion championship series.

"We just came a long way to coming together as a team this year," Funkstown manager Darryl Powell said. "Everybody on this team had a role and everybody accepted their role and did their part to win this district."

It was the sixth district title in the past 13 years for Funkstown.

Funkstown (24-8), which has won 16 of its last 19 games, started its game-winning rally with one out in the last of the ninth. P.J. Hiser walked, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Mount Airy (26-16-1) then walked Josh Carter and Matt Allen intentionally to load the bases. However, Mount Airy's strategy backfired when Aaron Showe also walked to force home Hiser with the winning run.

Funkstown pitcher Billy Keyes got the complete-game victory, striking out nine.

"My teammates backed me up by playing good defense," Keyes said. "I was able to get a lot of fly outs and groundouts."

Danny Fowler hit a solo homer in the first for Funkstown, and Jon Showe finished with three singles.

"I have been here for three years," Jon Showe said. "In my last year here, it feels good to go out the champ."

Funkstown advances to the Maryland State Tournament at McCurdy Field in Frederick. Funkstown will play its first game at 4 Friday against the Mountain District winner, which will be either Garrett or Cumberland.

P.J. Hiser went 3-for-6 during the series with two home runs, five RBIs and five runs scored for Funkstown. One of those home runs was a game-winning, two-run shot in the 11th inning during Funkstown's 10-8 victory in the first game.
