N.M. man held on sex charges

A New Mexico man charged with having sex with a 13-year-old Hagerstown girl he met at a Florida baseball game was being held Friday on $450,000 bond at the Washington County Detention Center.

Robert Martin Godwin, 41, of Sante Fe, N.M., told Washington County District Judge Ralph France he has no criminal record and has never even been arrested before.

Assistant Washington County State's Attorney Arthur Rozes said Godwin is a chef who travels around the country and has no ties to keep him in Maryland if released.

"This is a very disturbing case involving a 13-year-old girl," Rozes said.

Early Thursday morning, Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Ken Cain responded to the hospital where Hagerstown City Police were with the victim who told them of the alleged sexual encounters at the Econo Lodge near State Line, Pa.

The girl told Cain and Investigator Kenny Barnhart she met Godwin at a baseball game in Florida on March 13 and that they remained in contact by telephone after she returned home to Hagerstown, court records said.

On July 18, the girl said, she telephoned Godwin and asked him to meet her at Valley Mall. When he arrived, he picked up the girl and her two friends and they went to lunch, court records said.

Later they all went to the Econo Lodge and, while the friends waited in the car, Godwin and the girl allegedly went into the motel room and had sex, court records said.

The girl told deputies Godwin later took her friends home and returned to the motel where Godwin and the victim had sex numerous times while they spent the night together and again the next morning, court records said.

Charges and possible penalties include two counts each of second-degree rape (20 years maximum), and second- and third-degree sex offenses (20 and 10 years, respectively).
