Suns break losing streak at six

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - As it turned out, the Hagerstown Suns needed a little rain to stop the rain on their parade.

Hagerstown moved enough runners around the bases on ground balls and errors, then weathered a 68-minute rain delay to beat the Piedmont Boll Weevils 6-3 Wednesday night to stop their six-game losing streak.

The Suns (11-14, 45-50) took a 1-0 lead in the first when Shannon Carter was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on an error and came home on Chris Weekly's single.

Piedmont scored the next three runs off Matt Ford - who left the game in the third inning because of injury - before Hagerstown sealed its leaks.

The Suns took the lead in the fourth. Shawn Fagan and Kurt Keene both singled and moved up a base when Boll Weevils catcher Russ Jacobson sent his pickoff throw at second base into center field. Josh Holliday then grounded to third to drive in Fagan for a 3-2 game.

After another out, Jimmy Alvarez walked and Keene scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 3-3. Alvarez then stole second and third to set up an RBI infield single by Shannon Carter for a 4-3 game.

The Suns got single runs in the sixth and ninth. Holliday scored on an error after Brandon Jackson's infield single in the sixth, and Jamie Goudie walked with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Umbria, a catcher, played the full 1999 season with Hagerstown, hitting .290 with three homers and 20 RBI.

Umbria began 2000 at extended spring training, but Hagerstown will be his third stop this season. He started at Medicine Hat in the Pioneer League, where hit .345 with three homers and 14 RBI in 14 games. He also went 5-for-10 with four RBI in four games for Queens in the New York-Penn League.

In 20 games with the Suns, Bundy was hitting .225 with two homers and 12 RBI.
