Deer and Pheasant FarmROXBURY, Pa. - Whether he sells them by the hoof, the foot or in the egg, Troy Wenger is one of 1,580 Pennsylvanians who are licensed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission to breed, raise and sell native wild animals and birds.

Wenger, 38, owns Pin Oaks Deer and Pheasant Farm where he raises and sells ringneck and exotic pheasant breeds, quail and whitetail deer. There are pens, cages and coops spread around his 1 1/2-acre home, which is in a residential neighborhood on Forge Hill Road.

"I've been messing with birds for seven years and with deer for about four years. It's like anything else, it just gets bigger every year," Wenger said.

He hurt his back at work about two years ago and had to quit his job. Worried about what he was going to do next, his wife suggested that since he liked his hobby so much why not do it full time.

"Of course that's not all I do around here. I also home school our children and keep the house clean," Wenger said.

He is licensed by the game commission to raise ringneck pheasants, bobwhite quail and whitetail deer. He doesn't need a permit to raise the six breeds of showy exotic pheasants in his pens.

His game-bird customers include hunting clubs and private shooting preserves and other breeders. He also sells to farmers and landowners who want the birds around their property to look at, he said.

Wenger's deer customers include shooting preserves, other breeders and people who buy them for pets.

"They make good pets," Wenger said. "If you bottle-raise a fawn at two days old, they'll follow you around like a dog and eat out of your hand."

Wenger can sell a bottle-fed fawn at four months old from $600 to $1,000. "They cost more because of the time involved," he said.
