Waynesboro school board to amend minutes

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The members of the Waynesboro school board will amend the official minutes of a controversial May 30 special meeting to reflect the context of an exchange between Director Leland H. Lemley and Pat Heefner - a member of the board's facilities committee.

Lemley requested the change, maintaining the minutes did not accurately reflect what he said.

Before Tuesday's action, the minutes read that Heefner started to make a comment, but "Mr. Lemley and Mr. (Kerry) Bonner started shouting at her to shut up and sit down. Mr. Lemley then made the comment, 'I'm going to kick your (butt),' referring to Mrs. Heefner."

Lemley said the quote was not in context.

"Listen to the tape, I never threatened Mrs. Heefner," Lemley said at Tuesday's meeting. He said he was referring to beating Heefner in a school director's election.

"Lee's statements are more accurate than the minutes," Board member Stanley Barkdoll said.

School Board President Robert J. Ternes told Lemley "no amount of parsing words will change what you said." He suggested the minutes include a complete transcript of what he termed a "regrettable incident."

Following the meeting, Lemley said he had no problem with the revision "as long as the context of the discussion is there."

District Clerk Bobbi Trostle said the revisions to the minutes would be reviewed by the board at its Aug. 8 meeting.

The board voted 8-0 to amend the minutes on a motion by board member Lawrence W. Glenn.
