Funkstown clinches second half title


FUNKSTOWN - Funkstown Post 211 clinched the Western Maryland District American Legion second-half title to push its way into a best-of-3 weekend series for the right to play in the state tournament.

Post 211, 9-2 in the second half with only tonight's game remaining, will travel to face first-half champion Mount Airy on Friday at 5 p.m., before hosting them in a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.

The two teams will play at Brunswick on Sunday at 1 p.m. if needed.

Funkstown hosts Mount Airy in the regular-season finale tonight at 5:30.


Hub City/Pinesburg Softball

Craig's Paving 20, Hatch and Kirk 5: Jeff Schlotterbeck had seven hits, Mick Byers had five hits, including a homer, Calvin Staubs had five hits, including a homer, and Mel Weaver had five hits, including two homers, for Craig's Paving. Brad Weaver had four hits, including a homer, Kim Keller, Kenny Keys and Lew Thomas had four hits, while Jim Fisher and Bob Tritch had three hits.


J & W Mechanical 12, Jerry's Sporting Goods/Adam's Pizza 10: Randy Shives and Chad Turner each had three hits, while Bob Hannon, Jeff Kirby and Kevin Pannuty each had two for J&W Mechanical.

Dual Highway Motors 24, Siegfried's 14: Jeff Perla and Kevin Fuller had five hits each and Brian Selby homered to lead Dual Highway Motors. Jeff White added four hits.

Osborne/Richard's/Wilbert 16, Miller Lite 1: Mike Green and Tommy Carter had four hits to lead Osborne. Jim Mitchell and Jason Draper had three hits and Heath Crone and Scott Osborne homered.

Craig's Paving 20, J&W 10: Louie Thomas had four hits and Mel Weaver and Brad Weaver each had three hits, including a homer, to lead Craig's. Bobby Tritch, Mark Manuel, Kenny Keyes, Kim Keller and Jeff Schlotterbeck all had three hits.

Stadium Tavern 23, Stouffer's 7: Scott Holder had five hits, including a home run, to lead Stadium. Eric Andrews, Brian Smith and Andy Wine had three hits and Eric Leather, Greg McCoy and Mike Barnes homered.

Hagerstown Church Softball

Otterbein 18-11, Christ Lutheran 9-6: Kenny Hilker and Mike Duncan each had five hits, while Mike Grimm and Rodney Baker each had four for Otterbein. John Pickett added three hits, including a home run.

Jody Koontz had two home runs and Curtis Berry had one for Christ Lutheran.

Tri-State Fellowship 15, Tri-State of God 5: Todd Street had five hits and Chuck Smith was close behind with four for Tri-State Fellowship. James and Jim Knodle each had three hits and Jaimie Snyder added a triple and a home run.

New Life 20, WIlliamsport Assembly of God 9: Bill Durboraw had five hits, including a home run, to lead New Life. Bill Childers had two hits, including a homer, and Steve Pryor had three hits.

Christ Reform/St. James 23, Hagerstown Church of the Bretheran 7: Eric Banfee had four hits to lead Christ Reform. Lloyd Kelly had three hits and Matt Shannon added two hits.

Grier records ace

Andrea Grier recorded a hole-in-one at the 75-yard fifth hole at Yingling's Golf Center. She used a pitching wedge for the ace. She was accompanied by Alicia Grier and Josh Reeves.
