FUNKSTOWN - P.J. Hiser's pitching and hitting sparked Funkstown Post 211 to a sweep of Frederick Post 11 7-0 and 10-3 in a Western Maryland District American Legion baseball doubleheader on Saturday.

It was the 13th win for Funkstown (8-2 second-half district, 21-8 overall) in its last 16 games.

Hiser belted a three-run homer in the first game and then blasted three homers for five RBI as he went 4-for-4 during the second game. Hiser leads Funkstown in seven offensive categories: .506 batting average, 15 home runs, 45 RBI, 45 hits, 47 runs scored, 26 walks and 14 stolen bases.

"I was seeing the ball real well and I made them throw good pitches," Hiser said. "They were throwing down the middle where I can keep hitting them. I just tried to find the gaps. But they left the ball up; so I took the ball out of the ballpark."

Hiser also fired a two-hit shutout in the first game with 13 strikeouts. Hiser leads the Funkstown pitching staff with a 1.59 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched. Hiser improved his pitching record to 5-3, which ties him for second place on the team in wins.

In the second game, Matt Bellon gave up only three runs in seven innings for Funkstown to raise his pitching record to 7-1, which leads the team's pitching staff.

"P.J. Hiser did it on both ends today," Funkstown manager Darryl Powell said. "P.J. was able to pitch a good ballgame and he had good power in both games. Matt Bellon also pitched an outstanding ballgame. Matt was always around the plate and he kept them off-balanced."

Funkstown scored all seven of its runs in the first game during the second inning. The big blows were Hiser's three-run homer and Danny Fowler's two-run single. Fowler had two hits.

During the second game, Matt Allen slugged a two-run homer for Funkstown. Matt Johnson, Josh Carter, Trey Cobb and Allen had two hits each for Funkstown.
