Paxton G. Snyder

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Paxton Gregg Snyder, 62, of Harpers Ferry, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at his home.

Born Jan. 31, 1938, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry Paxton and Treva LeMaster Wroe Snyder.

He was a 1956 graduate of Shepherdstown High School; and a 1963 graduate of Shepherd College.

He retired in 1988 from West Virginia Department of Human Services in Quality Control Review.

He served in the 351st U.S. Army Reserve Unit.

He was a member of Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of American Legion of Sharpsburg.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Park Snyder; a son, Timothy G. Snyder of Middleway, W.Va.; two sisters, Melinda Winstead of Somerset, N.J. and Suellyn Small of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three brothers, William J. Snyder of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Harry R. Snyder of Orlando, Fla. and Robert M. Snyder of Martinsburg; a grandson; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. The Rev. Randall Tremba will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Shepherdstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sarah L. Huff

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Sarah Leona Huff, 90, of Jefferson Village in Charles Town, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born Feb. 19, 1910, in Clarke County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Hebber and Ella May Huff Ashby.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Howard Huff.

She was a homemaker; and had owned and operated the Mecca Restaurant in Berryville, Va.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by one son, Thomas E. Owens of Jefferson Village in Charles Town; four stepdaughters, Kathleen Lovelace of Charles Town, Louise Fuller of Williamsburg, Va., Helen Cooksey of Hillsboro, Va. and Donna Lou McDonald of Berryville; three stepsons, Frank H. Huff Jr. of Melbourne, Fla., Charles R. Huff of Berryville and David A. Huff of Winchester, Va.; one sister, Edith Shumaker of Hagerstown; one brother, James H. Ashby of Berryville; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ashby W. Owens; three sisters, Molly Virginia Ashby, Margaret Diffenderfer and Catherine Linaburg; and one brother, Amos W. Ashby.

Memorial graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Shenandoah Memorial Park Cemetery, Route 522 South, Winchester, Va. The Rev. Jack Weise will officiate.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town.

Paula F. Martin

Paula F. Martin, 79, formerly of 522 W. Howard St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 10, 1921, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Byron M. and M. Estelle Cole Wingert.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira F. Martin, in 1983.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Earl Smith, CPA, in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg. She had been a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown; C.C.D., and was past grand regent of Catholic Daughters of America at St. Mary's.

She is survived by a daughter, Estelle M. Martin of Chambersburg; a son, Alfred E. Martin of Hagerstown; a brother, Donald E. Wingert of Dundalk, Md.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Byron E. Wingert.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Robert S. Passarelli will be celebrant. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown. Prayers will be offered at 7:45 p.m.

Robert A. Allen

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Robert Arthur Allen, 85, of Harpers Ferry, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at his home.

Born Oct. 4, 1914, in Rippon, W.Va., he was the son of the late Edward E. and Florence V. Long Allen.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy P. Foley Allen, in 1979.

He retired in 1978 from Martin-Marietta in Martinsburg, W.Va., after 37 years as a well driller. He owned and operated Allen's Wonderland in Harpers Ferry.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a sharpshooter.

He was of the Episcopal faith.
