Wheaton Park concerts to begin

The Wheaton Park free concert series will kickoff June 25 with a performance by the Caribbean American International Steel Orchestra at 3 p.m.

Originally from Trinidad and Tobago the nine-member steel band plays music with an island soul sound.

Two performances will be featured in July. On July 9, vocalist Imani, will perform at 3 p.m.

Imani sings traditional African music along with blues, jazz and spiritual pieces.

On July 23 at 3 p.m. story teller Namu Lwanga will weave tales from Uganda and original stories with music and dance.

Capping off the 2000 concert series will be the Aug. 6, 3 p.m. performance by Bill Grimmett, Griot. The storyteller will share classical and original African folktales.


The events will canceled in the event of rain. All of the performances are free and seating is limited. People are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.

The concert series is sponsored by the Washington County Arts Council, Citicorp, HotSpots Program and Washington County Gaming Commission.
