Steel drums kick off concert series

A steel drum orchestra from Trinidad/Tobago will kick off this summer's Wheaton Park free summer concert series on Sunday, June 25, at 3 p.m.

The nine-member Caribbean American International Steel Orchestra will play music that has a unique island sound.

Three more programs are planned at the park, which can be reached by turning left off Jonathan Street onto North Street, going one block and turning right into the park.

- On July 9, Imani will be in concert at 3 p.m. A vocalist, she mixes traditional African music with jazz, blues and spirituals.

- Namu Lwanga will be "weaving traditional stories from Uganda and her own original stories with music and dance" on July 23 at 3 p.m.

- The final event will be Aug. 6 at 3 p.m. with Bill Grimmette Griot, who brings a message from ancestors through classical and original African folktales.

The summer series is sponsored by the Washington County Arts Council, Citicorp, Washington County Gaming Commission and the HotSpot program.
