Police seek man who had sex with 14-year-old

June 15, 2000

Hagerstown City Police were on the lookout for a man who had a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl Thursday morning in Doub's Woods Park.

"This is being investigated as a crime because of the age difference between the suspect and the victim," said Lt. Gary Spielman. "The sexual contact was apparently consensual."

In Maryland, sexual contact between an adult and a juvenile 14 or younger is a crime, whether consensual or not.

Spielman said the girl told police she was walking in the 900 block of South Potomac Street at 8 a.m. when a black man in a silver Ford Tempo pulled up and began a conversation.

The girl got into the car with the man, believed to be in his mid-20s, and they drove to the park where they had sexual intercourse, Spielman said.

The girl later walked to South Hagerstown High School and told a friend who encouraged her to call the police.

Spielman said the girl was taken to Washington County Hospital for an examination. She was later released.

The man had stubble on his face. The car had Maryland temporary tags 02384R.

Anyone with information about the man or the car may contact police at 301-790-3700.
