Voters pass police levy

June 13, 2000|By ANDREW SCHOTZ

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - By an unofficial vote of 1,084 to 415, city residents on Tuesday approved the extension of a levy to pay the salaries and benefits of nine existing police officers.

"I'm gratified that the public supports the police department," said Martinsburg Police Chief Ted Anderson.

He said it's the widest margin of victory for any police levy.

The city has collected a police excess levy from property owners since 1990. It pays for nine current officers, or about one-fifth of the force, plus equipment related to their work.

The city estimates that the three-year levy will generate about $2 million. It will be collected starting July 1, 2001.

The current levy expires June 30, 2000, but due to a surplus in the levy fund, the city will not collect for the levy in the next fiscal year.
