Science scholarships

June 12, 2000

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Up to 30 scholarships are still available for Shippensburg University's Summer Science Academy for Girls, which encourages girls to pursue careers in science.

Open to girls completing grades six to eight, the academy is granting 50 scholarships for each of the two sessions: Sunday, June 18, through Thursday, June 22; and Sunday, June 25, to Thursday, June 29.

The 100 scholarships are each worth $355.

Through various projects and activities, the academy helps girls realize that they can succeed in the science field. They will be mentored by an all-female faculty and staff, which includes undergraduate students pursuing careers in science or science education.

The academy's theme this year is chemistry and computer science. The girls will learn about global positioning systems and how to make ice cream and tie-dyed shirts with logos.
