BRUNSWICK, Md. - A Brunswick High School student on her way to graduation practice was killed when the car in which she was riding swerved out of control on a curve and hit a tree Thursday morning, Frederick County Sheriff's deputies said.

Cynthia Lynn Geisinger, 16, of Frederick, Md., was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:58 a.m.

Deputies said the driver, Darren Shay Wigfield, 17, of Jefferson, Md., was heading south on Horine Road near Gene Hemp Road at 7:55 a.m.

The 1990 Acura Integra went out of control on a curve, swerved onto the right shoulder and then back onto the road, sliding sideways, deputies said.

The car crossed the center line and went onto the north shoulder of Horine Road, where it hit a tree on the passenger side.

The impact split the Integra in two, with the passenger side coming to rest upside down.

Geisinger was pinned inside the car and had to be freed by rescue personnel.

Wigfield was treated at Washington County Hospital and released.

Geisinger and Wigfield were seniors at Brunswick High School enroute to practice for graduation, scheduled for Thursday night at the Knott Arena at Mount St. Mary's College.
