Miss Maryland Pageant gets under way in Hagerstown next week

Festivities for the 65th anniversary Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageant will get under way Sunday, June 11, when the 26 local representatives from across the state arrive in Hagerstown for a week of appearances, rehearsals and competitions. The Four Points Hotel on Dual Highway in Hagerstown serves as headquarters for the Miss Maryland Scholarship Organization and will be the host hotel for this year's contestants.

Opening ceremonies are set for Monday, June 12, at 1 p.m. at Valley Mall, featuring the pageant contestants and Miss Maryland 1999 Keri Schrader, who was third runner-up to Miss America last year.

The 65th annual Miss Maryland Pageant will be Thursday, June 15, through Saturday, June 17, at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown, hosted by Miss America 1987 Kellye Cash.

Thursday and Friday preliminary competitions and Saturday's final begin at 8 p.m.

The top 10 finalists will be announced Saturday night. The field will then be narrowed to the top five and from there, the new Miss Maryland will be selected. Interview counts for 30 percent of a contestant's score, talent counts for 40 percent, evening wear will count for 15 percent and physical fitness in swimsuit will count for 15 percent.


Contestants are required to have an issue that is of importance to them. The new Miss Maryland will speak on her platform and will represent the state in the nationally televised Miss America Pageant this fall in Atlantic City, N.J.

More than $3 million in cash scholarships and in-kind awards will be given. The Miss Maryland program ranks fourth in the country for total scholarships awarded within the Miss America Program.

Tickets are $10 for the June 15 show, $15 for the June 16 show and $30 for the June 17 show. There is a $2 service charge.
