Phil Ridenour has received the Washington County employee of the year award for his work in establishing a fire and rescue department at the Hagerstown Regional Airport.

County Administrator Rodney Shoop presented the award to Ridenour during Tuesday's meeting of the Washington County Commissioners.

The employee of the year award winner is selected from the four quarterly Innovative, Dedicated Employee Award (IDEA) winners. Community leaders unanimously selected Ridenour, who won the quarterly award in December 1999, Shoop said.

In 1996 Ridenour did all of the work involved in starting the Airfield Rescue and Firefighting Unit at the Hagerstown airport and initially ran it as a one-person department. It is now a four-member department.

He is chief of the Maugansville Goodwill Fire Co. and has done volunteer work for more than 23 years, Shoop said.

He receives a plaque, a $1,000 check from the county and a paid day off, Shoop said.

Ridenour, who was surprised to get the award, said he was at Tuesday's meeting on other business.

"Did they fool you?" Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook said.

"I had no idea," Ridenour said.

Ridenour said many county employees are as deserving of the award.
