Roundup - Indians advance in Pa. baseball playoffs

June 05, 2000

ROYERSFORD, Pa. - Jeff Kirkpatrick scored on a passed ball with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to lead Waynesboro to a 3-2 victory over Downingtown in a Class AAA first round playoff game Monday.

Kirkpatrick walked, stole second and went to third on catcher Dave Gibbons' overthrow before coming around with the winning run.

The Indians (20-8) managed just three hits against two Downingtown pitchers, but took advantage of nine walks to advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round.

In the fourth, Brian Kirkpatrick walked and courtesy runner Scott Thompson scored all the way from first on Matt Lowans' double. Downingtown scored in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score.

Chad Dewees singled to start the fifth. Ben Leonard walked and Jason Walck reached on an infield single to load the bases. Jeff Kirkpatrick walked to score Dewees for a 2-1 Waynesboro lead. Downingtown again tied the score in the bottom of the inning.

Ryan Devlin (9-4) got the win, going seven innings, striking out three and walking none. He gave up nine hits - all singles.

Lowans was the Indians' starter, but he struggled through the first inning and told coach Greg Chandler his arm didn't feel right.

"He was a little sore from his start last Thursday against Red Land," Chandler said. "We knew going in he wasn't 100 percent. He walked a couple in the first and worked out of it, but you can't afford to get down too many in a playoff game.

"We put Devo in the bullpen and he pretty much did the job," Chandler said. "He hit his spots and got the outs."

Lowans, Devlin (2) and B. Kirkpatrick. Scott Rambo, Dan Armstrong (8) and Dave Gibbons. WP - Devlin 9-4. LP - Armstrong (9-1).
