Little League works to rebuild its burned concession stand

June 05, 2000

CLEAR SPRING - With donations continuing to come in, the Clear Spring Little League concession stand - damaged in a May 25 fire - may soon rise from the ashes.

The blaze, which gutted the concrete block building at the Washington County park grounds in Clear Spring, began accidentally around 5:30 p.m. that Thursday while a game was being played, according to league official Gary Grove.

"No one was hurt but we lost everything inside the building," Grove said. While the county owns the building, the league owned the uninsured contents, Grove said.

Collections are being sought at other Little League games. On Sunday afternoon, more than $130 toward the rebuilding was taken in at a home run derby contest at National Little League in Hagerstown.

For the time being, the Clear Spring Little League is running its concessions out of a trailer loaned to the league by Joe Chaney and his wife.

"Work has already begun cleaning out the inside of the building," Grove said.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the rebuilding, can send donations to Clear Spring Little League, P.O. Box 417, Clear Spring, Md. 21722.
