Poetry workshop

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Chambersburg Area Council for the Arts will hold a poetry workshop, "From Paintings to Poems," Tuesday, June 13, at 7 p.m. at the Council for the Arts office/gallery at Kerrstown Square, 166 S. Main St.

Poets of all levels in grades nine and above are invited to attend the workshop and to submit up to three poems inspired by the council's "Eclectic Expressionism" exhibit for possible publication in the council's newsletter/calendar of events. Selected poems will be featured at a public poetry reading at the CELEBRATE! The Arts at Old Market Day festival Saturday, July 15.

Poet and educator Martha M. Wickelhaus will conduct the workshop, which will feature a discussion of participants' personal style and poetry experience, examples of poems inspired by paintings and specific suggestions for writing poems based on paintings. The workshop is free, but due to space constraints, is limited to 20 participants, by reservation only. Persons interested in participating should call the council at 1-717-264-6883.

Poets may submit poems inspired by any one of the exhibit's paintings or by the exhibit as a whole. Additional hours for viewing the exhibit will be Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. All types of poetry will be eligible for consideration, such as experimental, formalist or free verse. Each poem should be no longer than 40 lines. Poems must be received at the council by Monday, July 10.
