Devils crushed in final: District 3 title runs away from Greencastle

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Yes, Greencastle-Antrim baseball coach Chris Sellers admitted the Blue Devils didn't play their best game on Thursday. In fact, they played far from it.

But as Sellers also pointed out, "Even if we had, I don't know if we would have won anyway."

Greencastle's 13-1 loss to Littlestown in the District 3 Class AA championship wasn't glamorous by any means. But as poorly as the Blue Devils played at times, Littlestown also played that well.

"They're the best team we've played this year," Sellers said. "Good teams make other teams make mistakes."

The rout started in the top of the first, when Brady Crouse hit an inside-the-park two-run homer to the huge expanse in left-center for a 2-0 lead.

It continued in the second, when Syril Kress hit a solo homer to right for a 3-0 lead, then after two singles, a walk and a fielder's choice, Crouse's single scored two for a 5-0 advantage.

Those five runs came without many Greencastle mistakes, but the six runs Littlestown scored in the fourth to ice the game came via three hits and four Blue Devils errors. Jason Boyd's two-run triple made it 7-0, and Crouse added another RBI single in the frame, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Sellers said some of his team's collapse to the pressure of playing in such a big game.

"That's the biggest crowd this team's played in front of. It's a lot of pressure," he said.

Greencastle's run came in the bottom of the fifth, when David Izer doubled to right to leadoff and moved to both third and home on passed balls.

Other than that, Bolts pitcher Robert Rohrbaugh shut the Blue devils down, throwing a five-inning complete game and allowing three hits and two walks while striking out seven.

* In the District 3, Class AAA championship, defending state champion Chambersburg jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings and defeated arch-rival Waynesboro, 7-3.

Aaron Edwards threw a complete game for the Indians, while Adam Witter hit a two-run homer over the vacant football field press box to right in the first inning to jump start Chambersburg's bats. Witter added an RBI single in the second.
