Local roundup - Sweeney earns another post-season honor

Pat Sweeney led the Frostburg State baseball team in nine offensive categories.

Now the Clear Spring graduate is leading the Bobcats in league honors.

Sweeney, a senior outfielder, ws selected to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Southern All-Star team by a panel of coaches.

"Pat's efforts were outstanding," said FSU head coach Chris McKnight. "Making the all star team is a well deserved honor."

Sweeney led the team in nine offensive categories, by hitting .446 with 50 hits, including 12 doubles and seven home runs, along with 36 RBI and 87 total bases. He had a .777 slugging percentage and a .526 on-base percentage. The left hander also had three saves as a pitcher.

Sweeney led the Bobcats to an 18-16 record, the school's 17th straight winning season.

The all-star honor was Sweeney's third of the season. He was also named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Most Valuable Player and All-AMCC.


Sweeney, a four-year starter, owns nine FSU career records, including hits (181), doubles (45), home runs (30), runs batted in (148), extra base hits (79), total bases (324), batting average (.437), slugging percentage (.738) and saves (seven).


Frederick 6, Williamsport Post 202 1

Derek Hoffman and Justin Hamilton combined for a four hitter with nine strikeouts in a losing effort for Post 202.


Hagerstown Pony League

Troopers 11, Hagerstown Floors 3: Andy Taylor and Craig Henson combined for 15 strikeouts for Troopers. Bryson Appel had two hits, including a home run, Bingie Bingaman had three hits in the win, while Phil Saloom and Will Mulieri each had a home run and Brian Everitts had two hits. Zach Light had two hits for Hagerstown Floors.

UAW 5, F&M 2: Jeremy Everitts hurled a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts to lead UAW. Patrick Hutzler had two hits and drove in two runs for UAW. David Miner and Tim Kellinger combined to strike out 18 for F&M while Andy May had two hits.

Conococheague Little League

Taylor Trucking 12, Post 202: Nick Bodner and Kevin Davis had three hits to lead Taylor Trucking. Bodner and Tysen Palmer combined to pitch the win. Josh Reed and Bo Price had two hits for Post 202.

District I Big League

Clear Spring SAL 15, South County 10: Justin Blair, Travis Barnhart, Todd McCall, Dustin Taylor, Sam Higgins, Danny Wright and Randy Blair all had two hits for SAL.

American Little League

Kerch's BBQ 12, VFW 11: Gerald Tonsil led Kerch's with two hits, including an inside-the-park home run. Billy Campbell led VFW with two hits.

Before and After 8, Antietam Fire Co. 1: Dustin Price, Billy Springirth and Chris Bell combined for a no-hitter with six strikeouts. Springirth had an inside-the-park home run to lead Before and After.

West End Minor League

St. Lawrence 12, FOP 0: Kyle Head doubled for St. Lawrence. Charles Bachetell had two hits for FOP.

Valley Little League

FOP 13, St. Lawrence 3: Alex Bust, Ben Scally and Jonathan Shoate combined on a three-hitter, striking out 11. Bust led FOP with two hits and four RBI. Nathan Vendetta had two hits for St. Lawrence.

Washington Co. Girls Softball League

AFSCME 14, M&M Mars 5: Brianna Hammond had three hits and Amanda Gunter had two for AFSCME. Sydney Taylor had two hits for M&M.

Capitol Building Supply 12, BJ's 6: Ashley Johnson and Arienne Munoz had two hits each to lead Capitol. Christina Line had two hits for BJ's.

Middletown Sportsland 21, Keebler 4: Jessi Hammersla hit a grand slam and Janet Coe had three hits for Middletown Sportsland.

South Mountain Little League

Post 10 10, Lions 7: Andy Brabson, Cameron Shifler, Zack Shifler and Daniel Tonetti all had two hits, Cameron Shifler also homered for Post 10. Allen Beard had two hits for the Lions.

Halfway Junior League

Hartle's 11, Redman 10: Charlie Kline pitched a complete-game while striking out 10 and Kyle Lewis had two hits for Hartle's. Brad Hineman had three hits for Redman.

Halfway Little League

Valley Storage Bin 8, Gibney's 7: Tyler Spigler, Joey Maas and Dee Scott had two hits each for Valley. Matt Stevens and Levi Pouge both had two hits for Gibney's.

West End Little League

AFL-CIO 7, Staggs 3: Alex Tyler and Justin Leibrand combined to strike out 16 to lead AFL-CIO.

Federal Little League

Kiwanis 12, Exchange 2: Harrison Hammond had two hits and pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead Kiwanis.

National Little League

Elks 8, FOP 6: Derek Hendershot went 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI and Jeff Sines struck out five for the Elks. For FOP, Christian Selby had three hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in three runs.

Maugansville Junior League

AAC 12, PAM 11: Tommy Garrett had a two-run single and Steve Muse went 3-for-3 to lead AAC. Mike Hamby picked up the save.

Clear Spring Minor League

Orioles 11, Pirates 6: Zach Leazier and Corey Shrader had two hits to lead the Orioles. Gabe Hirsh struck out seven. Jeremy Johnson had three hits for the Pirates.

Hagerstown Colt League

VFW 6, UAW 5: Preston Ward homered and Darren Burnett tossed a three-hitter to lead VFW.
