Sex case brings jail term

May 30, 2000

A Hancock man who had sex with a girl half his age was sentenced Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court to one year in jail.

Washington County Circuit Judge Frederick Wright sentenced Dale Eugene McCarty, 30, of 121 W. High St., to five years in prison for a third-degree sex offense, but suspended four years.

After he is released from the Washington County Detention Center, McCarty will be on probation for five years and was ordered to have no contact with the victim, now 15.

According to court records, McCarty had consensual sexual intercourse with the girl on a number of occasions in his home and his car between April and June, 1999.

A Washington County grand jury indicted him in December 1999 after an investigation by the Maryland State Police.

Wright told McCarty, who had no attorney, that he had 90 days to request work release while he is at the local jail.
