Renovations planned for People's OK'd

May 30, 2000

The Hagerstown City Council on Tuesday approved renovation of the former Peoples building on the southwest corner of Public Square.

The improvements include adding a ramp for handicapped accessibility along the outside wall of the West Washington Street side of the building and re-grading the brick sidewalk on the South Potomac Street side of the building so the ground and the floor of the building are on the same level.

City Engineer Bruce Johnston said the City Council probably will have to formally approve plans for the ramp because the ramp will be on a public sidewalk.

The ramp would extend about 3 feet into the sidewalk, which is more than 11 feet wide at that point, Johnston said.

The building's owners, Public Square Associates, have proposed replacing the corner door with windows, adding a new entrance facing South Potomac Street, and adding the ramp, according to city documents.

Plans are to renovate the interior of the building to make room for two offices with separate entrances, Johnston said.

The county office of the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation is expected to move into the building, which is at 3 Public Square.
