Man enters assault plea

May 25, 2000

Robert Carroll Eichelberger pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in Washington County Circuit Thursday.

Sentencing was delayed for Eichelberger, 29, of 328 Mitchell Ave., who was returned to prison where he is serving time for an unrelated conviction.

According to court records, Eichelberger broke into an apartment in the 200 block of South Prospect Street at 1:50 p.m. on Jan. 2.

There he became involved in a domestic dispute with the female resident who told Hagerstown City Police she was asleep on the couch when awakened by Eichelberger.

He began yelling at her, and hitting and kicking her, court records said.

At one point, Eichelberger went to the kitchen and returned with a knife that he held at her face, court records said.

A short time later, Eichelberger left the apartment but police soon apprehended him.

In exchange for Thursday's plea, charges of second-degree assault, burglary and reckless endangerment were dropped.

Eichelberger faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.
