SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg's three new council members asked to delay the fiscal 2001 budget proceedings during a special meeting Tuesday evening.
Council members Jerome Martin, Jake Johnson and Elizabeth Mann, who were sworn in prior to the meeting, said they didn't feel prepared to vote on the budget and related issues on June 6 as planned and wanted extra time to get their facts and figures straight.
Martin, Johnson and Mann voted to hold a special meeting to decide on the budget on June 13 at 7 p.m.
Incumbents Mike Rohrer and Charlie Slick voted against the measure.
A public hearing is scheduled for May 30 at 7 p.m. The budget must be in place by July 1.
The council must decide whether to hire a third police officer and raise water and sewer rates. Also on their plate is the unresolved matter of the town's police chief.
