Raymond E. Miller

Raymond E. "Pete" Miller, 80, of Bower Avenue, Hagerstown, who died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth Mary Shank Miller.

Helen M. Witter

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Helen Marie Witter, 83, of Menno Haven, and previously of 2167 Loop Road, Chambersburg, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Menno Haven.

Born Aug. 3, 1916, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Fred A. and Ida Picking Witter.

She worked on the assembly line at Corning Glass Works, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of Chambersburg Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by one brother, Merle E. Witter of Chambersburg; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Roy F. Witter, Glenn Witter, Joseph A. Witter, Frank P. Witter and Harry M. Witter.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 725 Norland Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Kenneth Gibble will officiate. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Ruth O. Downey

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ruth O. Downey, 83, of Manorcare Health Services, and formerly of 1735 Wilson Ave., Chambersburg, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at Manorcare.

Born May 28, 1916, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank D. and Trella Mouer Mickey.

Her husband, Harry E. Downey Jr., died in 1977.

She worked at Hennessy Products for 14 years, retiring in 1974.

She was a member of Zion Reformed Church in Chambersburg.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadephia Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jeffrey R. Diller will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Zion Reformed Church, 259 S. Main St., Chambersburg, PA 17201; or to American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Agnes M. Anderson

RANSON, W.Va. - Agnes May Anderson, 76, of Ranson, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson.

Born May 10, 1924, in Charles Town, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William F. and Nora Elizabeth Owens Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Melvin Anderson Sr., in 1982.

She retired from the Dietary Department at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson.

She was of the Lutheran faith.

She is survived by three daughters, Hazel M. Denney of Rippon, W.Va., Peggy JoAnn Francis of Toccoa, Ga. and Shelva Jean Gifft of Charles Town; a son, Carl Melvin Anderson Jr. of Ranson; two sisters, Julia Martin and Edna Gifft, both of Ranson; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William F. Jackson and Philip M. Jackson.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town. Pastor Richard E. Neal will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.

James E. Ford

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - James E. Ford, 76, of Kearneysville, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Jan. 31, 1924, in Solley, Md., he was the son of the late David and Maggie Ford.

He was a retired carpenter.

He was a member of Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Grethel Church Ford; a daughter, Patricia Firesheets of Clearbrook, Va.; a son, James L. Ford of Hawaii; a stepdaughter, Barbara Gibson of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; three stepsons, Stephen Phillips of Chatsworth, Ga., Daniel Phillips of Summersville, W.Va. and Claude Phillips of Martinsburg; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. The Rev. Dennis E. Jackman will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Evelyn R. Maphis

Evelyn R. "Toady" Maphis, 72, of 430 Liberty St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 11, 1928, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Gilbert E. and Edna Griffith Frye.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dalford Maphis, in 1962.

She was employed by E. J. Fennel for 30 years.

She was a former member of Shepherdstown Methodist Church.

She was a former member of Local 435; I.L.G.W.U.; acting vice-president of Maryland State and D.C. A.F.L.-C.I.O.; president of United Retirees Club of Hagerstown; and an officer C.O.P.E. director of Central Maryland Labor Council.
