Local Roundup - Rhodes, Jefferson roll past Eagles

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Jimmy Rhodes won his 30th career game, striking out nine, walking three and allowing two earned runs as Jefferson advanced to the W.Va. Class AAA Region II Section 2 championship series with a 7-2 victory over Hedgesville on Tuesday.

Brandon Conway had a two-run single in Jefferson's four-run third inning that clinched the game. Lonnie Vickers added an RBI single in the frame.

Josh Green had two hits and scored three runs, while Craig Smith had two hits, including a triple in the first, and drove in two for Jefferson (27-4).


Hedgesville finishes the season 16-11.

Waynesboro 5, C. Dauphin 3

DAUPHIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Jeff Kirkpatrick had a double and a triple and drove in two runs as Waynesboro advanced to the championship of the Mid Penn Commonwealth/Capital tournament with a victory over Central Dauphin in the second round.

Ryan Devlin (7-3) went the distance to earn the win, allowing just six hits for the Indians (16-6).

Mecersburg 12, St. Andrews 2

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - David Cline sparked Mercersburg's five-run first inning with a three-run homer as the Blue Storm rolled in six innings.

Cline (4-2) earned the win, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out eight for Mercersburg. Alex Laddbush hit two doubles as the Blue Storm added three runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Joe Widmyer and Josh Carter had back-to-back home runs in the sixth and Widmyer added a two-run double as St. Maria Goretti edged Bullis School in eight innings.

Chad Brashears hit a three run home run in the eighth to end the game.

Trey Cobb went the distance and had eight strikeouts for the Gaels.

LOYSBURG, Pa. - Darcy Everetts' RBI single in the third inning held up for the Spartans until Northern Bedford rallied for three runs on two McConnellsburg errors for a win in the Sideling Hill League.

Nicki Potts went 3-for-3 with a double - the only extra-base hit of the game - for McConnellsburg (4-14, 3-5).

Woodpoint 11, St. Lawrence 5: Sean Koontz, Jena Smith, Dustin Rowland and Joshua Smith all had three hits for Woodpoint. Koontz had an inside-the-park homer. Kenny Kitchen had three hits for St. Lawrence.

Sharpsburg Little League

Keystone Financial 7, Lions Club 3: Ryan Collins had 13 strikeouts and James Munday had two hits for Keystone Financial.

Halfway Little League

Gehr 13, Gibney's 4: Jimmy Sutch and Derrick Wolfensberger combined for 13 strikeouts, while Vaughn Zimmerman had three hits for Gehr. Zach Myers and Sutch added two hits. Levi Pogue had two hits for Gibney's.

American Little League

Elks 6, FOP 4: Chad Dutrow threw a four hitter, Cadyn Robinson had two home runs and four RBI to lead Elks. Justin Myers had four hits for FOP.

Federal Little League

Lions 11, American Legion 7: Tody Cox, Cody Henson and Andy Lytle each had two hits for Lions. Kevin Yildrim, Mark Lancaster and Shawn Baker had two hits a piece for American Legion.

South Mountain Minor League

Jerry's Sports and Designs Unlimited 13, Reese's Home Improvements 3: Justin Ellsworth hit a double and Jared Vaughn threw nine strike outs for Jerry's. Adam Stevens hit a double for Reese's.

West End Little League

Elks 5, Stags 1: Allen Carpenter had a double for Elks. Kent Worthington had three hits for Stags.

VFW 17, Elks 4: Matt Murray had four hits including a home run, Tanner Brown had three hits, D.J. Zimmerman had two hits, Tyler Shifler added two hits including a homer and Mike Santiago also homered for VFW.
