Boys Club members get to go up in plane

May 13, 2000

It was a perfect match - veteran pilot George Jarkey wanted to share his love of airplanes and Harry Browning had a bunch of kids with a desire to learn about flying.

On Saturday morning, five of those youngsters from the Washington County Boys and Girls Club got to go up in the clouds over Hagerstown with volunteer pilot Donald Myers in his four-seater Cessna airplane.

Myers, a resident of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., is a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

"Mr. Jarkey volunteered and has been working with about 10 fourth- to seventh-graders in my after-school program," Browning said in a telephone interview.

Once a week, they have been getting together at the club to learn about planes and flying.

All that classroom time led up to a written test of knowledge and then the highlight - Saturday's plane ride.

"It was really smooth but hazy," Browning said, noting he also got to go up with Myers on one of three trips.
