Junior ranger program

BOONSBORO - South Mountain Recreation Area summer Junior Ranger Program is sponsored by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. It is for children ages 7 to 14.

Children will explore the outdoors, learn about trees, wildlife, plants, insects, rivers, streams, oceans, forests, outdoor living and many other topics. There will be arts and crafts, nature games, hands-on experiences and living history programs. There are several levels of achievement along the Junior Ranger trail, with certificates or patches awarded for each level.

Park Naturalist Laura Wetzel will present the program. There will be two sessions. The first begins Monday, June 5, and runs through Saturday, July 15. The times for this session will be Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon, or Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. for ages 7 to 10. Ages 11 to 14 can participate Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon or Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. There is also a Saturday session from 2 to 4 p.m. for ages 7 to 10 and 5 to 7 p.m. for ages 11 to 14. Session two will begin Monday, July 17, and run through Saturday, Aug. 26. The same times will apply to the second session.

The fee for the program is $5 per child and can be paid at registration on the first day. Parents should contact Greenbrier State Park to register their children by calling 301-791-4656, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.
