Alvin F. Thumma Jr.

Alvin Frederick "Fred" Thumma Jr., 78, of 13846 Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, who died Monday, May 8, 2000, is survived by a sister, Peggy Ann Startzman of Baltimore.

Gary M. Sawyers

Gary Martin "Butch" Sawyers, 51, of 111 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at his home.

Born Sept. 6, 1948, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of Kyle D. Sawyers of North Carolina and Connie Harshman Sawyers Stitley of Frederick.

He had been employed for 10 years by Tony's Pizza in Hagerstown.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepfather, Charles Stitley of Frederick.

Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick. Those wishing to attend may assemble in front of Francis Scott Key Chapel by 1:50 p.m. to go to the gravesite. The Rev. Scott Philip Bellows will officiate.


There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, Frederick.

Patricia A. Good

WILLIAMSPORT - Patricia Ann Good, 62, of 16932 Sterling Road, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 11, 1937, in Buffalo, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Edgar and Audrey Beatrice Handel Dailey.

She was a 1955 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

She had been employed as a dispatcher for the Hagerstown City Police Department for 21 years.

She attended United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Greencastle Lioness Club; and Williamsport Ambulance Service.

She is survived by two daughters, Janet E. Maurer of Round Hill, Va. and Jill A. Fleisher of Pennsylvania; a sister, Frances B. Dailey of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and three grandsons.

Graveside services and burial will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Bethel Cemetery in Cascade.

There will be no visitation or viewing at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Williamsport Volunteer Ambulance Service, 30 W. Salisbury St., Williamsport, MD 21795.

Robert L. Burkholder

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert L. Burkholder, 96, of 183 Harvest Lane and formerly of the Grindstone Hill, Pa., area, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born July 5, 1903, in Guilford Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Adam and Annie Horn Burkholder.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah U. Heckman Burkholder, in 1985.

He had been a self-employed truck driver for 60 years first doing general hauling and then livestock.

He was a member of Solomon's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chambersburg.

He was a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Third Branch Canton; AARP Chapter 1507 of Chambersburg; a former member of Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.; and BPO Elks Lodge 600 of Chambersburg.

He is survived by four daughters, Geraldine V. Baer, Doris E. Dull, Joanne B. Bingaman and Shelva J. Stoops, all of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Solomon's Evangelical Church, Chambersburg. The Revs. Michael E. Allwein and Peter W. Emig will officiate. Burial will be in Grindstone Hill Cemetery in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home in Chambersburg.

Shirley A. Tressler

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Shirley Ann Chen Tressler, 72, of 601 Folger St., and formerly of Cascade, Thurmont, Md. and Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Dec. 24, 1927, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Frank L. and Catherine L. Barlup Chen.

She attended Waynesboro schools.

She was employed as a machine operator by Clair Frock Clothing Co. in Thurmont for 30 years, retiring in 1989.

She is survived by a son, Robert E. Tressler Jr. of Waynesboro; two sisters, Patsy Wustner of Odgen, Utah and Constance Carson of Gettysburg, Pa.; a brother, Robert Chen of Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Jean Bowman; and a grandson.

Graveside services will be Saturday, May 20, at 10 a.m., at Bethel Church Cemetery in Cascade. The Rev. Richard A. Seaks will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Franklin County Area Agency on Aging, 218 N. Second St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Arrangements are by Cumberland Valley Crematorium, Waynesboro.

Harry W. Canfield Jr.

KNOXVILLE, Md. - Harry William "Butch" Canfield Jr., 56, of 3508 South Mountain Road, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at his home.

Born Sept. 2, 1943, he was the son of Lucille V. Turner of Hagerstown and the late Harry William Canfield Sr.

He was a 1961 graduate of South Hagerstown High School.
