Town officers must resign to run for another office

May 08, 2000

WILLIAMSPORT - The Williamsport Town Council on Monday voted to prohibit town officers from running for other elected town posts without first resigning from their current positions.

Councilman Earle R. Pereschuk Sr. voted against the change to the town's charter, calling it "too restrictive" and "not fair to anyone."

Pereschuk, the only Independent party member on the council, said his peers pushed the charter change because they don't want him to remain on the council if he loses his bid for mayor in the March 2001 town election.

"I told them they didn't have to change the charter," Pereschuk said. "I will resign from my position and I will run for mayor."

Longtime Williamsport Mayor John W. Slayman said it was too soon to decide whether he will run again.

Councilman James C. Kalbfleisch, who made the motion to change the charter, said it wasn't a personal issue.

"Either you win or you lose. That's all (the charter amendment) is designed to do," he said. "It's nothing against anybody."
