Charles wins Region XX tourney

It was a busy weekend for Charles Hawks' sophomore pitcher Liz Estevez, who won all three games that she pitched during two days by giving up two earned runs in 19 innings and striking out 22 batters.

Charles completed a two-game sweep of the Catonsville Cardinals in the best-of-3 championship series with a 9-1 victory on Sunday in the Region XX Softball Tournament at Washington County Regional Park.

Charles (37-6) has won 30 of its last 31 games.

During Sunday's title-clinching game, Estevez allowed one earned run, while fanning five in five innings. Estevez got into just a brief jam when she gave up a single and a walk to Catonsville (20-10) in the bottom of the fifth inning. She struck out the next three batters - the last two looking.

Hagerstown's Mary Beth Kennell, both First Team All-Region XX and First Team All-Maryland JUCO Conference, was an All-American nominee. Kennell was Stacey Zeger was on the First Team, while both Heather Danley and Kim Twigg were on the Second Team for All-Region XX. Both Zeger and Danley were on the Second Team, while Twigg was Honorable Mention for All-Maryland JUCO Conference.
